Gestational Diabetes Tied to Long-Term Health Risks in Offspring
21 Mar 2025 • A genome-wide Mendelian Randomization study found that genetically predicted gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) increases the risk of preterm delivery (OR=1.150) and placental disorders (OR=2.143).
Key Findings:
- GDM was linked to higher risks of respiratory conditions like bacterial pneumonia (OR=1.141), congenital respiratory malformations (OR=1.673), and influenza with pneumonia (OR=1.078).
- Neurodevelopmental risks, including cerebral palsy (OR=1.721), and urinary disorders like acute nephritis (OR=1.098) were also noted.
- No link to major digestive or cardiovascular diseases.
