COPD Tied to Cognitive Decline and Greater Risk of Non-Amnestic MCI
29 Nov 2024 • A recent study indicated that COPD patients had a significantly higher risk of cognitive impairment compared to those without COPD.
The analysis included data from 12 studies with 625,644 participants. A subgroup analysis found no significant differences in the association between COPD and cognitive impairment based on sex or age.
However, COPD was associated with a greater risk of developing non-amnestic mild cognitive impairment (na-MCI) rather than amnestic MCI.
These findings suggest that COPD is an independent risk factor for cognitive decline, especially non-amnestic MCI.
The study concluded that continuous monitoring of cognitive function in COPD patients is critical to identifying and managing cognitive impairment early. This research supports the need for further investigation into the mechanisms linking COPD with cognitive decline.
