Childhood Myopia Rates on the Rise: One in Three Children at Risk
25 Sept 2024 • The global prevalence of myopia among children and adolescents is surging, with rates climbing from 24.32% in 1990 to 35.81% in 2023.
Projections estimate it could hit 39.80% by 2050, translating to over 740 million affected individuals.
Notably, higher rates of myopia were seen in East Asia (35.22%), urban areas (28.55%), among females (33.57%), adolescents (47.00%), and high school students (45.71%).
With the prevalence affecting nearly one-third of children and adolescents globally, the total number of myopia cases could surpass 740 million by 2050, underscoring the urgent need for public health interventions.
