Study Reveals Sarcopenia as a Major Risk for Gestational Diabetes
3 Feb 2025 • A bi-directional study has uncovered a significant causal relationship between sarcopenia and an increased risk of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM).
The study found that lower appendicular lean mass (odds ratio [OR] = 1.21), weaker grip strength (right-hand OR = 1.41, left-hand OR = 1.60), and slower walking pace (OR = 3.37) were all strongly associated with a higher risk of GDM.
Notably, GDM did not appear to cause sarcopenia, suggesting that sarcopenia may play a critical role in the onset of GDM.
These findings highlight the need for addressing sarcopenia as a preventive strategy to reduce GDM risk during pregnancy.
