Association Between Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease and Primary Acquired Nasolacrimal Duct Obstruction
24 Mar 2025 • There is a significant association between gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and primary acquired nasolacrimal duct obstruction (PANDO).
Key Findings:
- Analyzing data from over 157 million patients, found that GERD patients had a 2.49 times higher risk of developing PANDO compared to controls (HR: 2.49).
- The risk was notably higher in females (HR: 2.74) and in older adults ≥60 years (HR: 3.12). Comorbidities like diabetes, hypertension, and sinusitis further amplified the risk.
The findings suggest that it is important to monitor GERD patients for signs of primary acquired nasolacrimal duct obstruction.
