Major Study Links First Stroke to Lasting Cognitive Challenges

3 Oct 2024 • A first stroke causes an immediate decline in cognitive function, reported a a major study involving over 20,000 older adults across 14 population cohorts. This decline is coupled with an accelerated long-term cognitive deterioration.

While stroke survivors exhibited similar cognitive performance before their strokes as those who did not experience a stroke, stroke survivors experienced declines across all cognitive domains afterward, including language and processing speed.

Targeting modifiable vascular risk factors at an early stage may reduce the risk of stroke but also subsequent risk of stroke-related cognitive decline and cognitive impairment.
