Biomass Cooking Fuels Drive Tuberculosis Crisis in Indian Homes
2 Jan 2025 • A major study of India’s NFHS-5 data (2019–2021) has exposed biomass-based cooking fuels as a key culprit behind rising tuberculosis (TB) cases in households.
Indoor air pollution from these fuels significantly raises TB risk (aOR: 1.171), with additional dangers from indoor smoking (aOR: 1.501), semi-pucca housing (aOR: 1.886), and tobacco use (aOR: 1.144).
These findings emphasize the urgent need for interventions to reduce biomass fuel usage, improve living conditions, and bolster public awareness to achieve a TB-free India.
