Maharashtra FDA Authorizes Homeopaths to Prescribe Allopathic Medicines, Draws IMA Criticism

30 Dec 2024 • The Maharashtra FDA has issued a directive permitting homeopathic practitioners who have completed a state-recognized pharmacology certificate course to prescribe allopathic medicines.

Announced on December 26, 2024, the directive also authorizes retail and wholesale drug dealers to provide allopathic drugs to these certified homeopaths, making their prescriptions valid for dispensing such medications.

The move has faced intense criticism from allopathic doctors, with the Indian Medical Association (IMA) leading the opposition. Labeling the practice as “mixopathy,” IMA Maharashtra President Dr. Santosh Kadam announced plans for legal action, citing concerns over patient safety and the dilution of established medical standards.
