High Artificial Sweetener Use Raises GDM Risk in Pregnancy

9 May 2025 • Pregnant women who consumed high amounts of artificial sweeteners had greater odds of developing gestational diabetes, a new study reported.

Women with high intake of sweeteners such as sucralose, aspartame, and sodium saccharin had a GDM incidence of 56.9%, compared to 43.1% in the low-consumption group. High sweetener intake was associated with a two-fold increased risk of GDM (OR 2.66). The association was more pronounced in women with higher BMI and younger age.

These findings underscore the need for dietary caution regarding artificial sweeteners during pregnancy.
