Global HIV Trends and Future Projections: Can We End the Epidemic by 2030?

-The number of people living with HIV reached 40 million in 2021, and although HIV incidence and mortality are expected to continue declining, the number of people living with HIV will peak at 44.4 million by 2039. -Significant regional differences, with sub-Saharan Africa seeing the highest lifetime probability of HIV acquisition, parts of Asia faced rising HIV incidence, while South Asia saw declines. -Despite these improvements, forecasts suggest that global efforts will fall short of meeting the 2030 target of reducing HIV incidence and mortality by 90%, indicating that sustained and more aggressive measures will be needed to end AIDS as a public health threat.
