Nearly Half of Parkinson’s Patients Experience Respiratory Symptoms, Study Finds
24 Mar 2025 • A study examining respiratory dysfunction in Parkinson’s disease patients revealed that 44% experienced respiratory symptoms, with dyspnea and dystussia being the most prevalent. Several factors were found to independently predict these symptoms.
Dyspnea was particularly linked to female sex (OR: 1.39), longer disease duration (OR: 1.35) and history of pulmonary disease (OR = 7.12). Meanwhile, dystussia was associated with pulmonary disease (OR = 1.81), COVID-19 symptoms (OR=2.20) and swallowing issues (OR = 1.48) were identified as contributing factors.
These findings underscore the need for proactive screening and management of respiratory symptoms in PD patients.
