Active Surveillance, a Reliable Management Strategy for Prostate Cancer
31 May 2024 • Protocol-directed active surveillance has been identified as a safe and effective management technique to prevent both overtreatment and undertreatment of prostate cancer, according to recent research.
- This study comprised 2155 men with favorable-risk localized prostate cancer who did not undergo treatment for the same.
- In 90% of cases, grade 1 cancer was identified, and the median PSA (prostate-specific antigen) level was 5.2 ng/mL. Of these, 49% of men continued to be free of progression of cancer or treatment.
- There were three deaths (less than 1%) attributable to prostate cancer and 21 patients (less than 2%) progressed to metastatic cancer after 10 years of diagnosis.
