Time to Get Moving! Osteoporosis Patients Must Exercise 300 Minutes a Week to Cut Mortality Risk

11 Oct 2024 • Patients with osteoporosis need to engage in ≥ 300 min/week physical activity to significantly reduce their mortality risk. The higher the volume of physical activity, the lower the risk of death, reported a recent study published in the journal Osteoporosis International.

Unlike non-osteoporotic individuals, who see benefits with just 150 minutes, the findings indicate a linear dose-response relationship between physical activity levels and mortality risk for those with osteoporosis. Only those with high activity levels (≥300 min/week) saw substantial decreases in all-cause and cardiovascular mortality.

This suggests that greater physical activity volumes are essential for enhancing longevity in this vulnerable population, emphasizing the need for tailored exercise recommendations for osteoporotic patients.
