Immediate Surgery Proven Best for Frail Seniors with Uncomplicated Appendicitis
27 Aug 2024 • A major study highlights that immediate surgery is the best treatment for frail older adults with uncomplicated appendicitis.
Researchers found that immediate appendectomy led to lower mortality and fewer complications in frail patients, while nonoperative and delayed approaches were linked to higher risks.
In contrast, while immediate surgery showed increased complications compared to nonoperative management in non-frail patients, it still presented fewer complications than delayed operations.
These findings suggest that immediate surgery may be the preferred treatment strategy for frail older adults to minimize complications and mortality.
