Cardiovascular Threats in Down Syndrome: Stroke and AMI Risks Unveiled

9 May 2025 • A study tracking 5,155 individuals with Down syndrome (DS) and 257,750 matched comparators revealed a strikingly higher stroke risk in the DS group.

Ischemic stroke risk was over four times higher (HR 4.41), and hemorrhagic stroke risk rose five-fold (HR 5.14).

Among those with atherosclerotic and embolic risk factors, ischemic stroke risk dramatically amplified (HR 12.67 and HR 10.35, respectively).

While the overall rates of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) were similar to the general population, young individuals with DS showed an elevated risk.

These findings emphasize the need for early and vigilant cardiovascular monitoring in the DS population.
