Triptans Prove Best for Acute Migraine Relief, Outshining Newer Drugs
19 Sept 2024 • A major network meta-analysis comparing 17 oral migraine treatments found eletriptan, rizatriptan, sumatriptan, and zolmitriptan to be the most effective at providing pain relief within two hours as well as sustained pain freedom up to 24 hours, outperforming newer drugs like lasmiditan, rimegepant, and ubrogepant.
- In head-to-head comparisons between active interventions, eletriptan was the most effective drug for pain freedom at two hours, followed by rizatriptan, sumatriptan, and zolmitriptan.
- For sustained pain freedom, the most efficacious interventions were eletriptan and ibuprofen.
The study calls for triptans to be included in the WHO’s List of Essential Medicines for broader global accessibility.
