13 Mar 2025 • A large-scale case-control study has found a significant association between prior cholecystectomy and an increased risk of microscopic colitis (MC).

Key Findings:

• The risk was particularly elevated for lymphocytic colitis (aOR=2.65) compared to collagenous colitis (aOR=1.87).
• Cholecystectomy was linked to a 49% higher MC risk (aOR=1.49).

These findings underscore the need for clinicians to consider potential gastrointestinal consequences in post-cholecystectomy patients and highlight bile-acid dysregulation as a possible factor in MC pathogenesis.
