Aspirin’s Colorectal Cancer Protection: Greater Risk Reduction Seen in Those with Unhealthy Lifestyles
2 Aug 2024 • A landmark study tracking over 107,000 individuals for 30 years showed that aspirin cuts colorectal cancer (CRC) risk more effectively for individuals with unhealthier lifestyles.
Individuals with high BMI, smoking habits, heavy drinking, & poor diets experienced a greater absolute reduction in CRC risk, with a 10-year absolute risk reduction of 1.28%, compared to just 0.11% for those with healthier lifestyles.
Despite a similar relative reduction in CRC risk across all lifestyle scores, the absolute benefit of aspirin use was markedly greater for those with poorer lifestyle habits, suggesting aspirin might be a valuable preventive tool for those at higher risk due to lifestyle factors.
