Ocular Motor Nerve Palsy Linked to High Stroke Risk in Young Adults

19 Jun 2024 • In a recent study, researchers found a link between ocular motor cranial nerve palsy (CNP) and an increased risk of stroke, specifically in young adults.

  • The research aims to investigate the relationship between CNP (cranial nerves 3, 4, and 6) and subsequent stroke, with a focus on age as a factor. A cohort of individuals with third, fourth, or sixth CNP was followed from 2010 to 2017 and compared to a control group.

  • The results show that the ocular motor CNP group had a higher risk of stroke (hazard ratio [HR], 1.23), with the risk increasing significantly in individuals in their 30s (8.9 times) and 40s (2.49 times). The risk increased by 1.78 times in individuals in their 50s and 1.32 times in their 60s. However, there was no significant increase in stroke incidence for those in their 20s, 70s, or 80s.
