Long-Term Autoimmune Disease Threats for Women with Pregnancy-Induced Hypertension
3 Mar 2025 • Women with pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH) (gestational hypertension, preeclampsia, or eclampsia) face a significantly higher long-term risk of developing autoimmune diseases, according to a large cohort study.
Analyzing 289,564 women, those with PIH had nearly double the risk of developing systemic lupus erythematosus (HR 1.87) and elevated risks for conditions like multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, and inflammatory bowel disease. The severity of hypertension was associated with a greater risk, while age did not alter the outcomes.
This highlights the need for continued monitoring and preventive care for women with a history of PIH.
