Lifestyle Changes Cut Diabetes Risk in Some Pre-Diabetes Types, But Not All

6 Dec 2024 • A study evaluated the effectiveness of lifestyle interventions (LIs) in preventing diabetes and improving glycemic control in individuals with different pre-diabetes phenotypes - isolated impaired fasting glucose (i-IFG), isolated impaired glucose tolerance (i-IGT), and combined IFG + IGT.

  • The results showed that LIs significantly reduced diabetes incidence in those with i-IGT and IFG + IGT, but had no effect on i-IFG.
  • Additionally, LIs improved fasting plasma glucose, 2-hour plasma glucose, insulin sensitivity, and increased normoglycemia in individuals with IGT.

While lifestyle changes are effective for most pre-diabetes phenotypes, tailored interventions may be necessary for i-IFG to prevent diabetes.
