Extended Glucocorticoid Use Raises Risk of Spine Deformities in Rheumatoid Arthritis
7 Apr 2025 • A decade-long study has uncovered a concerning link between prolonged glucocorticoid use and cervical spine deformities in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients.
Among the newly diagnosed RA patients, 40% developed significant spinal issues like atlantoaxial or subaxial subluxation. For each additional year of glucocorticoid use, the risk increased by 19%, with a 9% higher risk for every gram increase in cumulative dose.
These findings highlight the need for alternative therapies to mitigate spinal complications in RA treatment.
