RA Patients More Likely to Develop Heart Failure, Mostly HFpEF
11 Dec 2024 • Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) significantly raises the risk of incident heart failure (HF), with the risk primarily driven by HF with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF), according to a study of over 5,700 patients.
- Compared to those without RA, RA patients had nearly double the risk of incident HF overall (HR 1.79) and a 99% higher risk of HFpEF (HR 1.99).
- However, no significant difference was observed for heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF).
These findings suggest that inflammation in RA contributes to the higher prevalence of HFpEF, highlighting an important area for intervention in RA patients.
