Lower Bone Density Linked to Higher Stroke Risk
27 Mar 2025 • A comprehensive meta-analysis of 13 studies involving 146,758 individuals has revealed a significant link between reduced bone mineral density (BMD) and increased stroke risk.
Key Findings:
- A decrease in BMD was associated with a 24% higher risk of stroke (RR 1.24), with women facing an even greater risk (RR 1.28).
- Individuals with osteoporosis or osteopenia had a markedly elevated stroke risk (RR 1.59), and in men specifically, osteoporosis tripled the likelihood of stroke (RR 3.16).
These findings underscore the need for closer cardiovascular monitoring in individuals with low BMD.
