Partner Therapy: A New Strategy to Prevent Bacterial Vaginosis Recurrence
6 Mar 2025 • Treating male partners alongside women reduces bacterial vaginosis recurrence, a trail found. In the partner-treatment group, women received metronidazole, while the male partners received both oral metronidazole (400 mg) and topical clindamycin (2% cream) for 7 days.
Within 12 weeks, 35% of women in the partner-treatment group experienced a recurrence of BV, compared to 63% in the control group. This significant reduction suggests that adding male-partner treatment to women’s therapy can lower recurrence rates.
Some adverse effects, including nausea, headache, and metallic taste, were reported in treated men, but the results indicate a promising approach to preventing BV recurrence.
