Probiotics Show Promise in Slashing NEC Risk and Mortality in Preterm Infants
14 Apr 2025 • Probiotic supplementation—particularly multi-strain formulations—was associated with a significant reduction in necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) incidence (RR: 0.51; OR: 0.59) and all-cause mortality (RR: 0.72; OR: 0.77).
The findings, drawn from data on both single-strain and multi-strain probiotic interventions, strengthen the clinical case for incorporating probiotics into neonatal care protocols for infants born before 37 weeks’ gestation.
This evidence positions probiotics as a compelling, evidence-based strategy to combat one of neonatology’s most feared complications.
