Sudden Death Among Indian Youth: Covid Vaccines Are Not the Culprit, Confirms ICMR Study
11 Dec 2024 • Union Health Minister JP Nadda informed the Rajya Sabha that an Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) study has found no link between Covid-19 vaccination and an increased risk of unexplained sudden deaths among young adults in India.
On the contrary, vaccination was shown to significantly lower the odds of such incidents, particularly for those who received two doses.
There have been increasing instances of reports of deaths of young adults suffering from sudden cardiac arrest. The rising numbers raised concerns that they might be related to COVID-19 or the vaccination against the disease, which prompted researchers to carry out the study, conducted jointly by the ICMR and the National Institute of Epidemiology.
ICMR conducted the study in August last year. The study titled 'Factors associated with unexplained sudden deaths among adults aged 18-45 years in India' -- a 'multicentric matched case-control study' -- at 47 tertiary care hospitals in 19 states and Union Territories.
According to the minister, other factors like prior COVID-19 hospitalization, family history of sudden death, and specific lifestyle behaviors were associated with a higher likelihood of unexplained sudden death.
