30 Jul 2024 • The Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC) has issued a drug safety alert for vancomycin, warning of a potential adverse drug reaction (ADR) known as Drug Reaction with Eosinophilia and Systemic Symptoms (DRESS) syndrome.

Vancomycin, used for severe infections like methicillin-resistant staphylococcal infections, brain abscesses, and meningitis, has been linked to severe ADRs such as extensive mucocutaneous rash, fever, lymphadenopathy, hepatitis, and hematologic abnormalities including eosinophilia.

Healthcare professionals and patients are advised to monitor for these symptoms and report any occurrences to the NCC-PvPI, IPC via the provided reporting forms or helpline.
