50 Years Later: How Preterm Birth Affects Long-Term Health

18 Dec 2024 • Previous studies have found associations between preterm birth and poorer cardiovascular health in adult survivors.

A recent study following survivors of preterm birth into their 50s finds that while preterm individuals are more likely to develop hypertension (34.7% vs. 19.8%), they experience fewer cardiovascular events compared to those born at term.

Other health outcomes, including diabetes and dyslipidemia, were similar across groups, challenging assumptions about long-term cardiovascular risks for preterm survivors.

The study, conducted in the age of antenatal corticosteroid use, suggests that while preterm birth may elevate hypertension risk, it does not necessarily translate to worse midlife cardiovascular outcomes.
