Vitamin D Supplementation Improves Clinical Outcomes in Extrapulmonary Tuberculosis Patients
10 Jul 2024 • A recent study discovered that newly diagnosed extrapulmonary tuberculosis (EPTB) patients often have low vitamin D levels. Supplementing with vitamin D3 (300,000 IU initially followed by 1000 IU/day) alongside standard anti-TB treatment improved serum vitamin D levels and more importantly enhanced clinical outcomes and treatment course.
Patients deficient in vitamin D received either anti-TB treatment alone or were given 50,000 IU of vitamin D3 weekly for 6 weeks, followed by 1000 IU/day. This approach led to significant improvements in weight, hemoglobin levels, and serum albumin, alongside reduced inflammation markers. Moreover, patients with TB pleurisy experienced enhanced resolution of pleural fluid and shorter treatment durations with vitamin D supplementation.
