Tonsillectomy Found Effective for PFAPA Syndrome, Tailored Treatment Key for Refractory Cases
21 Mar 2025 • A study on children with periodic fever, aphthous stomatitis, pharyngitis, and cervical adenitis (PFAPA) syndrome found that tonsillectomy effectively reduced or eliminated fever episodes in most cases, with response varying based on factors like glucocorticoid sensitivity, exudative pharyngitis, and absence of rash.
For 25% with milder flares and 23% with relapses, H2R antagonists (cimetidine, famotidine) provided relief in 79% of cases.
These findings highlight tonsillectomy as a key intervention but stress the need for personalized treatment in refractory cases.
