TBS: A Better Bone Health Indicator for Type 2 Diabetes Patients

4 Mar 2025 • A study examining bone health in post-menopausal women with Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) found that the trabecular bone score (TBS) could provide a more accurate assessment of bone quality than the traditional areal bone mineral density (aBMD), which often remains normal or increased despite the higher risk of fractures in T2DM patients.

aBMD did not differ significantly among women with T2DM, pre-diabetes, and normoglycemic individuals, the TBS was significantly lower in the T2DM group.

Moreover, both HbA1c levels and the duration of diabetes showed a negative correlation with TBS.
