Study Uncovers Alarming Link Between Rheumatoid Arthritis and Lung Cancer Risk
29 Jul 2024 • Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) significantly raised the risk of lung cancer according to a large-scale study of veterans spanning 2000-2019.
- With over 4.4 million patient-years analyzed, RA patients showed a 58% increased lung cancer risk, which persisted in never-smokers (adjusted HR 1.65) and those with newly diagnosed RA (adjusted HR 1.54). Notably, those with RA interstitial lung disease (RA-ILD) faced an alarming 3-fold higher risk compared to non-RA individuals.
There is a need for heightened lung cancer surveillance in RA patients, especially those with RA-ILD, to mitigate the impact of this leading cancer killer.
