Currently, albumin is used as a plasma expander to diagnose and treat certain complications of cirrhosis with ascites, such as hepatorenal syndrome. These complications include renal dysfunction brought on by spontaneous bacterial peritonitis and circulatory dysfunction brought on by paracentesis. Recent research has demonstrated that long-term administration of albumin to patients with decompensated cirrhosis lowers mortality and the incidence of complications, makes it easier to manage ascites, is cost-effective, and has a good safety profile.
