Cough may be characterized as acute (< 3 weeks), subacute (< 3-8 weeks), or chronic (>8weeks). Chronic dry cough poses a great diagnostic and management challenge due to myriad etiologies. In adults, postnasal drip syndrome, asthma, and GERD are the most common causes and have been referred to as a 'pathogenic triad of chronic cough'. Other factors that come into play in the DD of chronic dry cough include use of ACE inhibitors, tobacco smoking & environmental exposure.
