CPAP Lowers Cardiovascular Risk, but Only in High-Risk Obstructive Sleep Apnea Patients
2 May 2025 • Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy significantly reduces the risk of major adverse cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events (MACE)—but only in a select subgroup of patients with high-risk obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).
Among these patients, CPAP reduced MACE risk by 17% (HR: 0.83), with stronger effects seen in those without excessive daytime sleepiness or high blood pressure (interaction HRs: 0.59 and 0.54, respectively).
This study highlights the need for precision in OSA treatment, suggesting cardiovascular protection from CPAP is not universal, but reserved for physiologically high-risk individuals.
