Younger Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Face Greater Risks - Time for Action!
26 Oct 2024 • In a long-term analysis conducted over nearly 30 years, results highlighted the stark differences in outcomes between younger-onset (diagnosed before 40) and later-onset type 2 diabetes.
- Younger-onset patients exhibited a significantly higher standardized mortality ratio (3.72) compared to those diagnosed later (1.54).
- While later-onset patients had higher incidence rates for most complications, younger patients faced greater risks for diabetes-related endpoints, all-cause mortality, and microvascular disease at any age.
- Additionally, younger patients had poorer glycemic control, indicated by consistently higher HbA1c levels during the first two decades post-diagnosis.
These findings underscore the urgent need for targeted management and support services for younger patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.
