India’s First Dorsal Root Ganglion Stimulation Surgery Offers New Hope for Chronic Pain Relief
29 Nov 2024 • A pioneering procedure performed at a leading hospital chain and cancer centre in Chennai marked a significant milestone in pain management.
A team of spine surgeons and pain specialists carried out India's first Dorsal Root Ganglion (DRG) stimulation surgery using a spinal cord stimulator on a 30-year-old patient from Oman.
The patient had endured debilitating groin and upper thigh pain for over two years after a testicular tumor surgery in Oman.
The pain was diagnosed as genitofemoral neuralgia, caused by damage to the genitofemoral nerve during surgery.
This chronic pain, which lasted more than two years, had resisted conventional pain treatments. The DRG stimulation procedure, a first of its kind in India, successfully alleviated the patient's chronic pain by stimulating the dorsal root ganglion in the spine, blocking pain signals from the damaged nerve.
This innovative treatment offers hope to patients suffering from nerve-related chronic pain, highlighting India's advancement in medical technology.
