Thrombocytopenia Heightens Mortality Risk in Hospitalized Pneumonia, COPD, and Asthma Patients

5 Mar 2025 • A nationwide study analyzing over 3 million adult hospitalizations from 2016 to 2020 reveals that thrombocytopenia in patients with pneumonia (PNA), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and asthma significantly worsens outcomes.

Key findings include:

  • PNA patients with thrombocytopenia had 2.31 times higher in-hospital mortality (HR 2.31).
  • COPD patients with thrombocytopenia faced 2.99 times higher mortality (HR 2.99).
  • Asthma patients showed a 7.26 times higher mortality (HR 7.26), with a 626% increase in in-hospital mortality compared to non-thrombocytopenic patients.
  • Patients with thrombocytopenia had longer hospital stays, higher resource utilization, and increased intubation rates across all conditions.

These findings highlight the urgent need for targeted interventions addressing thrombocytopenia to improve outcomes in these high-risk patient groups.
