Kidney Transplants from HIV-Positive Donors Deemed Safe for HIV-Positive Recipients
17 Oct 2024 • Kidney transplants from HIV-positive donors to HIV-positive recipients are as safe as transplants from donors without HIV, according to a large study across 26 U.S. centers.
Transplants from HIV-positive donors were noninferior to those from HIV-negative donors in terms of overall safety, with similar survival rates at 1 and 3 years.
While recipients of HIV-positive kidneys had a slightly higher rate of HIV breakthrough infections, there were no cases of sustained HIV treatment failure.
These results support the noninferiority of HIV-positive kidney transplants, potentially paving the way for their broader clinical use beyond research.
