Transient Elastography as a Game-Changer in Diagnosing Biliary Atresia
10 Mar 2025 • Results revealed that biliary atresia (BA) patients had significantly higher liver stiffness measurements (LSM) compared to non-BA, with a median LSM of 19.4 kPa versus 12.0 kPa.
Combining transient elastography (TE) with ultrasound findings of a small gallbladder (<19mm) improved sensitivity to 97%, though specificity remained lower (52.2%).
This study suggests that TE, particularly when paired with ultrasound, could serve as an effective, non-invasive screening tool for BA in settings with limited access to invasive procedures like liver biopsy or intra-operative cholangiogram.
