Do Higher Viral Loads in Dengue’s Febrile Phase Point to Severe Outcomes?
6 Nov 2024 • A large study of 362 dengue patients in Sri Lanka found no clear link between viral load during the febrile phase and the severity of the disease.
Significant variations in viral loads were observed across different DENV serotypes, with DENV3 showing the highest and DENV2 the lowest levels. Despite lower viral loads in DENV2 infections, this serotype was associated with an increased risk of developing DHF.
Viral loads were significantly different in the febrile phase between different DENV serotypes, and do not appear to significantly associate with subsequent clinical disease severity, concluded the study.
