Hearing Loss Linked to Increased Parkinson's Disease Risk
23 Oct 2024 • In a large study of over 3 million U.S. veterans, hearing loss significantly increased the risk of developing Parkinson’s disease (PD) in a dose-dependent manner.
Veterans with varying degrees of hearing loss faced significantly higher incidences of PD compared to those with normal hearing. Those who received hearing aids saw a significant reduction in PD cases—up to 21.6 fewer diagnoses at the 10-year mark.
These results suggest that hearing loss may serve as an early indicator of PD risk, underscoring the need for regular hearing screenings and appropriate interventions.
