Morning Coffee Drinkers May Have a Longevity Advantage, Linked to Lower Risk of Mortality
9 Jan 2025 • A recent observational study has revealed that people who drink coffee in the morning are at a lower risk of all-cause mortality compared to those who drink coffee throughout the day.
Researchers used data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) and the Women’s and Men’s Lifestyle Validation Study (WLVS and MLVS) to analyze coffee drinking patterns.
The study tracked participants for a median follow-up of 9.8 years. The findings showed that 6% of participants followed a morning coffee pattern, 14% drank coffee throughout the day, and 48% did not drink coffee at all. The study suggested that morning coffee drinkers had a hazard ratio of 0.84 for all-cause mortality and 0.69 for cardiovascular disease-specific mortality, compared to non-coffee drinkers.
However, the morning-type drinkers showed no significant association with cancer mortality. The all-day-type coffee drinkers, in contrast, were not associated with CVD-specific mortality or cancer mortality.
