Seizure Risks in Pregnancy: New Study Highlights Fetal Complications

3 Apr 2025 • A large study of 1,110 pregnancies in 934 women with epilepsy reveals that 56.6% experienced seizures.

Key Findings:

  • Seizure deterioration during pregnancy occurred in 25.9%, with 20.9% worsening in later trimesters.
  • Adverse fetal outcomes—including major congenital malformations, neurodevelopmental delay, low birth weight, and fetal death—were significantly linked to seizures (aOR 1.472), particularly status epilepticus (aOR 2.906) and generalized tonic-clonic seizures (aOR 1.581).
  • Seizures in the second or third trimester notably increased LBW risk (aOR 2.324).
