Risk Factor Patterns in Young Cryptogenic Stroke: Role of PFO and Modifiable Contributors
22 Apr 2025 • A large study sheds new light on the rising incidence of young-onset cryptogenic ischemic stroke (CIS), revealing distinct risk profiles based on the presence of a patent foramen ovale (PFO).
Among patients aged 18–49, traditional vascular risk factors—such as hypertension and smoking—were strongly associated with CIS in those without PFO (OR per factor: 1.42).
Nontraditional factors, notably migraine with aura, dominated the risk landscape for patients with PFO (OR: 2.66), with migraine alone accounting for nearly half of the stroke burden in this group (PAR: 45.8%).
