Vitamin D Supplementation Reduces Benign Positional Paroxysmal Vertigo Risk and Recurrence
16 Apr 2025 • Vitamin D supplementation cut the risk of recurrent benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) by more than half (RR 0.45), according to a meta-analysis of 60 studies.
Patients with BPPV—especially in the recurrent cases—had notably lower vitamin D levels than those without (WMD −2.84 and −5.01, respectively). Low vitamin D was also more prominent in canalolithiasis versus cupulolithiasis subtypes.
Higher vitamin D levels were linked to reduced BPPV incidence (RR 1.36), with a modest protective effect against recurrence (RR 0.95). These findings highlight vitamin D deficiency as a potentially modifiable factor in BPPV, with supplementation offering a promising preventive strategy.
