Stroke Patients Face Elevated Long-Term Risks After Thrombectomy, Study Finds
1 May 2025 • Patients who underwent thrombectomy were found to have a significantly increased risk of recurrent stroke beyond 90 days after hospital admission.
These patients had a 2-year stroke and palliative care-free survival rate of just 36.6%, compared to 45.8% in those who did not undergo the procedure (adjusted HR 1.19). While overall mortality or need for palliative care was similar between groups (HR 0.89), the incidence of new stroke was notably higher in the thrombectomy cohort (HR 1.25).
These findings spotlight the critical need for aggressive secondary prevention strategies and prolonged surveillance in post-thrombectomy stroke survivors.
