Self-Medication with Antibiotics on the Rise in Andaman and Nicobar Islands
13 Mar 2025 • A study in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands reveals a concerning level of antimicrobial self-medication, a major contributor to antibiotic resistance.
The research found that 64.3% of individuals self-medicated based on advice from pharmacists (27.8%), hospital staff (21.7%), or personal experience (19.3%). Notably, 65.4% altered dosage, primarily based on symptom changes, leading to inappropriate usage patterns. Socio-demographic factors, including age, gender, and religion, were tied to self-medication practices.
These findings underscore the need for public awareness campaigns to address misuse of antibiotics and prevent the development of antimicrobial resistance.
