Over Half of Indian Healthcare Workers Deem Workplaces Unsafe, Survey Reveals

21 Oct 2024 • A recent survey of 1,566 healthcare workers across India reveals that more than 50% consider their workplace unsafe, particularly in state and central government medical colleges.

  • Nearly half reported a lack of dedicated duty rooms during long shifts, with existing facilities lacking basic amenities like ventilation, cleanliness, and air conditioning.
  • Over 70% felt security personnel were ineffective, and 62% found emergency alarm systems inadequate.
  • Critical areas such as ICUs and psychiatric wards showed severe lapses in access control, surveillance, and overall security.
  • Alarmingly, 90% of institutions lack proper weapon screening, and nearly three-quarters reported insecure hospital perimeters.

Dr. Jugal Kishore, the study’s lead author, highlighted the "dire picture of insufficient security" in these critical healthcare environments, jeopardizing the safety of both workers and patients.
